Josephine Alibrandi, a Catholic girl, narrates the novel in her final year of High school. She attends St Martha's, a wealthy catholic school in Sydney's eastern suburbs. Her academic scholarship ensures her place at the school as she is not as well off as the population of largely wealthy Anglo-Celtic girls that attend the school. Her Italian origin has been the reason for much persecution toward her in her life. Her background against the moneyed origins of her peers also provides much source of angst for Josie. Josephine is a different person at the end of the novel, different from who she was in the beginning. What causes these changes to occur? She was the vice school captain of St Martha's, has the support of friends such as Sera, Anna and Lee and her close relatives, her mother and grandmother, and most of all her boyfriends Jacob Coote and John Barton.

Marchetta contrasts Michael against negatively representations of fatherhood figures such as Senator Barton and Francesco Alibrandi. Living in a multicultural Australian community in the nineties where the enforcement of opposing cultures, beliefs and opinions is expected and the pressures of expectations are abundant would not be easy. This is especially obvious if the ‘victim' is emotionally unhinged or at least slightly ajar and looking for stability through constants, including their heritage and who they actually are. The themes that are present are: family, multiculturalism and heritage. The family theme will include the struggles Josephine goes through with her family, such as her father running out on her mother, and the impact on Josie as her mother having a constant need to find someone to fill that void.

The multiculturalism theme will include the difficulties that Josie faces as she has a mix of both Italian and Australian culture, which include the themes and traditions for both cultures. Josie first thinks of Nonna as an over protective, egocentric grandmother who is only worried about herself and what people think of her, she got on her nerves and hated her butting in. Josie, submerged in her own future self-identity and longing for cultural freedom, is initially oblivious to the importance of family and the other key aspects of life.

What information is given about Josie's background? Refer to her family, education and class. Jose is from Italian descent wog in the story. She is a middle class family and goes to a rich Catholic school funded from her scholarship. The protagonist, Josephine Alibrandi, displays the importance of self-acceptance through a riveting odyssey of belonging. Marchetta highlights the significance of relationships and the effect that they have towards the outcome of emancipation.
